Where is Saraswati School?

SARASWATI SCHOOL is in Nepal which lies between China and India in South Asia. Saraswati School is our sister school and is located in a small village, Maguwa, in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. Maguwa is a 12 hour bus trip from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

How did we get our contact?

In 2007, Mrs Jenny O'Connor, a teacher from Lindfield East, travelled to Nepal on a trekking holiday hosted by Lyn Taylor who regularly visits Nepal. Mrs O'Connor learnt of a school that was built by very poor villagers and how lacking in resources they were. Since then, Lindfield East has established links with Saraswati School.

Why did we become involved?

As part of developing values of compassion and respect for other cultures, Lindfield East decided to establish ongoing links with Saraswati School. We want to help them achieve more for their school.

How have the students at Lindfield East supported Saraswati School?

Money was used from the ‘Welcome Back' night and the SRC have raised money by holding a disco at school. With the money raised, we have built a new classroom at Sarswati School with new desks and benches. We have decorated the interior walls and connected water to the school. We have also provided a new blackboard, pens, pencils and books. Previous LEPS school uniforms have been sent to Nepal which the students have eagerly received.

Links with Saraswati School

Year 5 students at LEPS have written letters to the students in Nepal and have received drawings and letters in return. Handicrafts made in Nepal have been sold at LEPS with the profits going back to Saraswati School so that more of their needs can be met.

What are the future goals for Lindfield East?

  • We are looking forward to helping a neighbouring school of Saraswati and to provide them too with better facilities and resources.
  • We want to source a bilingual teacher, a speaker of Nepalese and English, to provide daily lessons to the pupils at Saraswati School.
  • We would like to provide a scholarship for a student at Saraswati School to attend a high school in Kathmandu.
